Acer Iconia A100 Seven-Inch Honeycomb Tablet Spotted, Priced

It appears that Acer has finally successfully managed to shove Honeycomb into a seven-inch package. The Acer Iconia A100, heavily delayed because of incompatibility between its software and hardware components, has appeared at Wal-Mart. And it is cheap.

While Honeycomb should soon be much friendlier toward seven-inch tablets when the next update, Android 3.2, is released, it appears that Acer has finally managed to get the older version of the OS to work with the A100 as indicated by the appearance of price tags and advertisements at at least one Wal-Mart location.
The listing at this Wal-Mart priced the A100 at $349, adding it to the ranks of increasingly budget-priced tablets that still sport something of a brand name.

The A100 comes as the little brother to the A500, both in Acer’s growing Iconia line of notebooks and tablets. In our Iconia A500 review, we found the tablet to be generally capable, although a bit oversized and bulky. The A100 will obviously remediate that main complaint with its small screen and size.

An official launch date is still not known, but it should be just around the corner considering the preparatory steps Wal-Mart has taken.

Archos 101 G9, 80 G9, Arnova 7: Three Tablets Each Less than $350

Archos has gone on an unveiling spree, with announcements of two new Honeycomb (version 3.1) tablets, and a Froyo tablet that sets the bar as low as it can go in terms of price, squeaking in at less than $100.

Archos 101 G9

Starting at the top, there’s the Archos 101 G9, the biggest and most expensive of the three tablets Archos has unveiled this week. That’s not saying much, at least in terms of expense, and at $349 the 101 G9 is still less costly than most other tablet PCs currently available.

The 101 G9 will feature a 10.1-inch (1280 x 800) display, dual-core 1.5 GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor, 250 GB HDD, and full-size USB port. It will also run the most updated version of Honeycomb currently available with Android 3.1, although a new version of Honeycomb (Android 3.2) and Ice Cream Sandwich should be available around or before the G9 series is released.

Archos 80 G9

The 80 G9 will be very similar to its big brother above, just trim down the screen size to eight inches and scale back the resolution to 1024 x 768, and there you have it. Both the 80 G9 and 101 G9 will have access to the Android Market, and should start selling in late September.

Archos Arnova 7

Measuring seven-inches and weighing in at a lean 12 ounces is Archos’ final contender, the Arnova 7. This little guy will not be featuring the latest and greatest hardware, or software, or anything notable at all, really, except for its price tag.

The Arnova 7 will cost less than a nice night out; it will cost less than a lot of pairs of shoes; it will cost less than a $100 gift certificate to Home Depot. The Arnova 7 is one of the cheapest tablets going, with an MSRP of $99.

In terms of its less-than-notable specs, the Arnova 7 will feature Android 2.2 (Froyo), a seven-inch resistive touchscreen with 800 x 480 resolution, and 4 GB of flash memory. Archos did not provide details on the device’s processor or external ports. The Arnova 7 will not have access to the Android market, instead working with the AppsLib store. A release date has yet to be announced.

What Are the Essential Honeycomb Apps?

By sophiesummers on 6:48 AM

comments (0)

The current crop of Honeycomb apps is scant in comparison to some markets, but is growing at a swift pace to meet the demands of a tablet-wielding populous hungry to play catch-up with iPad users and, in many cases, show them how it’s really done. Here’s a list of must-have apps for the new Honeycomb owner, optimized for tablet use and organized to suit a variety of daily needs.

CNBC Real-Time (Free)
This is an all-in-one app fully optimized for the tablet user whose primary purpose, as indicated by its default stock ticker screen, is for the real-time monitoring of stock market prices. The app delivers quotes before, during, and after-market hours, sourced directly from the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ. If this were simply a stock ticker app, it would be well worth the download bandwidth, but the fact is that it’s much more than that.

CNBC Real-Time also gives you access to financial news headlines and related stories, in addition to high quality, full screen video. The app is also customizable to your specific stock preferences in an easy to use and intuitive interface, and even allows you to customize the scrolling ticker at the bottom of the tablet screen. Breaking financial news is pushed, leaving no need to constantly update to stay on top of trends. Ideal for the investor constantly on the go, and optimized usability for tablet screens.

Movies by Flixster (Free)

It’s one thing to be able to check out local movie times to see what’s playing by checking your phone, and another thing entirely to do it on your Honeycomb tablet. Movies by Flixster uses your GPS position to populate a list of local theaters, what’s playing, and at what time. But beyond this, you can also view full length movie trailers (which naturally look far better on a Honeycomb tablet screen than they do on a tiny Android phone), read the movie’s synopsis, scan through user-submitted reviews, and even find restaurants close to the theater of your choice through the app’s integration with Yelp. Bonus: You’re not only limited to what’s currently playing – the app also provides information on new and upcoming DVD releases (including trailers) and its linkability to Netflix lets you add and manage your queue remotely.

FlightBoard ($3.99)
Some apps are wonderful time killers, others are educational tools. Then there are some apps that, by their very nature, are precisely the reason that mobile technology was invented. One such application that falls into the latter category is "FlightBoard", which turns your tablet into an arrival and departure announcement board for any airport in the world.

The old school look of the interface is designed after the flight board at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris, and is optimized for tablet screens with smooth scrolling and easy to operate airport selection. Apart from the simple informational nature of the app, it’s also optimized for social media and email. By clicking on the desired flight, you can share the information via Bluetooth, Facebook, email or TweetComb, and your recipient receives all information: departure and arrival times, assigned gates and terminals, and also the flight’s current status (as in en route, delayed, etc.).

TweetComb (Free)
Interestingly enough, "TweetComb", which is an application designed specifically for Honeycomb tablets that lets you sign into your Twitter account and tweet to your heart’s content, has a much more user friendly and attractive interface than the desktop version of Twitter you’re probably used to using. Whether that’s saying something positive about the design of TweetComb or something negative about the befuddling layout of Twitter itself (or both) depends on the user, but as a result, you may find yourself using TweetComb more frequently.

In TweetComb, your tablet screen automatically displays your Twitter Timeline, Mentions, and Direct Messages in three side-by-side frames that are independently accessible, but can be easily customized in preferences. Clicking hyperlinks opens a convenient browser window within the application itself, but you’re also given the option to launch a hyperlink in your tablet’s preferred browser. TweetComb also gives you access to TwitLonger, which as you can imagine allows you to tweet messages in excess of 140 characters – something that seems to fly in the face of logic when using a Twitter in the first place, but to each their own.

Qello (Free)
"Qello" is something of a dream come true app for live music lovers in that it claims to hold the biggest catalog of live HD concert videos in the world. Whether that claim will remain true for long – Qello currently has “thousands” of concerts in its database – will be determined by the passage of time, but for now, it stands as the preeminent Honeycomb tablet application of its kind.

Qello has a simple, handsome interface that makes YouTube look like it was designed by a novice web design student. Its overall look borrows from the best of YouTube and Netflix 'Watch Now', and in many ways the app is an amalgam of the two. The only “catch” is that you can only preview the full length concert videos in the Qello database. After about five minutes, you’re given the option of replaying the same footage or renting the full concert for 30 days on your tablet for $4.99. Regardless of whether you decide to browse or buy, this is still an app that essentially contains limitless entertainment value – and with its stutter free HD video quality, it becomes a must-have for the live music-loving Honeycomb owner.

MEDL Mobile is a leading mobile development studio with a track record of App Store hits such as Boxhead: The Zombie Wars - a game with nearly 1,000,000 players around the world. But when the team was hired by a father and son with an iPhone dream to create the game "Fruit Blast" the initial launch didn't go to plan.

The game, which features a fruit-throwing monkey who splats the user's screen with bananas, apples and pears, had all the mechanics of a hit. However, the app never broke through to the top of the App Store. Unflustered, the father/son team recruited family members, friends and colleagues to help tear the game down to its core elements - and then worked with MEDL to build it back up better and stronger than before.
The result is Fruit Blast 2.0 - with all-new graphics, new controls, new animations, a connection to Apple's Game Center, and a host of new features and fun.

"This whole process has been an amazing experience for my son Parker and I," said Mark Lewis. "It's a real-world opportunity to teach him about following your dreams, learning from your mistakes, and not giving up on success."

The essence of the game remains the same. A crazed monkey throws fruit at the player, who uses the accelerometer to aim fruit blasting weapons and destroy the flying fruit before it splats all over the screen. But the team analyzed and improved every aspect of the game - from the initial load and help screen through to the in-game purchases that allow a user to acquire bigger and better weapons.

"I can't wait for feedback from the current users," said Jon Rockmore, a Project Manager from MEDL Mobile. "We stayed true to what the game's fans loved. But we were given a lot of latitude to push the game in every way that made sense."

Fruit Blast will be made available for the first 10,000 downloads for free on the iTunes App Store.

"What makes LocoPing different from other location based dating or friendship apps is the fact that we're giving users the ability to record the history of locations they've been at for the past 24 hours," says Ray Panah, Sillero Technologies. "We don't want the App user to miss out on any chance of meeting new people. If you saw someone in the past 24 hours or have been around them, then you have the ability to look them up and text them, ask for their number or email address. We don't want to limit ourselves to be another dating App. You can use LocoPing for finding new friends in school, work, neighborhood, or just down the street at the diner."

Sillero Tech is banking on the fact that people want to connect to new people who go to the same places and not limit themselves to the usual social networking members... It's not about checking what your friend in Memphis posted on their wall 1/2 hour ago... Or where your sister went last night for dinner... People want to connect and socialize with people around them. People who go to the same places, work at the same building, other students who they never get to talk to. Business people don't have to exchange business cards, phone #s and email addresses at the next convention. Ray Panah said: "People can now use LocoPing to "ping" each other and exchange info without even knowing each other."

Sillero Technologies is an App Development company and the brewer of new innovative App ideas located in Orange County, CA.

Record a live recital, create home movies and upload amazing linear PCM audio and high-definition video with the new Olympus LS-20M. Incorporating technologies much like those that debuted in recent Olympus digital imaging products, the new LS-20M is the first Olympus recorder that captures and edits 1080p HD video while recording 24 bit/96 hHz Linear PCM stereo sound. Combined with four different optional Magic Movie special effects features, the LS-20M enables users to create home movies that look and sound like professional productions in a device that's so compact it fits in yourpocket.

"The potential number of uses for the Olympus LS-20M Linear PCM recorder are limitless," said Amy Leslie, product manager, Olympus Imaging America Inc. Anyone looking to capture and upload music performances, sporting events, weddings, meetings or just create their own fun videos, can use the LS-20M for their personal and professional audio and video needs.

Lights, Camera, Action The new Olympus LS-20M takes handheld recording to a new dimension with HD video. By combining Olympus superior audio capabilities, cutting-edge design and the outstanding optical performance expected from Olympus, this all-in-one handheld offers the versatility and practicality you need.

Olympus is creating more ways for consumers to share memories and express themselves through video. Users can capture full HD movies utilizing one of three video format settings up to 1080p for stunning HD video clarity. The camera lens and microphones are located on top of the unit – just point the device in the direction of the intended object and hit record. A crisp, 2.0-inch color LCD on the front of the device clearly displays the video as its being shot. Below the video LCD is a 1.46-inch LCD data screen that displays time, audio levels and battery life. Want to record a live recital that looks and sounds like a professional ballet? The LS-20M can do that, just point and record.

The HD video compression format makes it easy to upload videos to Facebook, YouTube, iTunes, Vimeo and other web-based content sharing sites, and the resolution offers remarkable detail on modern home theatre systems.

The camera features a 4.1mm (16:9 at 49mm, 4:3 at 59mm) autofocus lens and 4x digital zoom delivering premium video no matter where you are shooting. The Olympus LS-20M allows users to record in low light for more dramatic footage and also offers close-up video shooting. The combination of video and audio excellence has an infinite number of possibilities. Record a close-up of a hummingbird in HD video and set it to your own sound track of better-than-CD quality audio.

The fourth in the series, the LS-20M lives up to the company's renowned history of Linear PCM recording capability, to capture the rich, dynamic sound quality of music performances; like a studio in your pocket. The device captures rich, dynamic sound with its two condenser mics, and the ability to record in Linear PCM (WAV files) and MP3 formats. Use internal or external microphones to record better-than-CD quality audio for movies that sound like they were made in a Hollywood studio.

The recording features don't stop at amazing sound quality. For your convenience, the Olympus LS-20M offers manual or auto-level recording. The “auto” level is perfect if you are recording from the crowd. Thanks to the manual level, musicians can capture optimal sound checks and live performances.

Certain settings, like crowded press conferences or a live show at a packed club can provide unwanted background noise that can later be incredibly frustrating. Thankfully, the Olympus LS-20M features a switchable low-cut filter that enables users to eliminate low-frequency sounds and unwanted background noises, like coughing. Collaborating musicians who want to monitor the recording progress onthe fly can do so with the built-in speaker.

The Olympus LS-20M voice-activation feature automatically starts a recording when a certain level of sound is reached. The self-timer feature starts the recording process after a predetermined amount of time; both are ideal for recording a performance or video without having to operate the recorder.

Using technology from Olympus cameras, Magic Movie allows users to create exciting videos, then upload and share them with the world on YouTube or Facebook. Sigma SD1 Launched

By sophiesummers on 9:20 PM

Filed Under:

Announced last September during the Photokina 2010 trade show, the new Sigma DSLR SD1 is now becoming true : il will be available in a few weeks, in June. It will offer the X3 triple layer sensor developped by Foveon, a company taken over by Sigma a few years ago. It counts on a stunning detail level to compete as its pricetag is set at a high $ 9,700 in the US and £6,199 in the UK.

The Sigma SD1 frame is made of magnesium, which ensures both lightweight and durability to the SLR. Weatherproof thanks to a sealing reinforced body, the SD1 will be able to be used in hostile environments. The 46 megapixels sensor signal will be treated by the latest TRUE II processor that will also help the SD1 to reach 5 fps in burst mode, a rather modest performance for a camera of that price which is not the only area where the Sigma SD1 seems to be undergifted... a basic 11-points autofocus system, a 460 000 dots screen or a 98% only viewfinder are among the technical specs of a rather amateur camera, yet, priced at a professional level of money you'd expect to spend on a more advanced SLR. But Sigma totaly counts on its new sensor to push the SD1 sales.

The SD1 will be available in June 2011.

What should make the Sigma SD1 so special and worth its price is its unique sensor technology. Developped by Foveon, a company later bought by Sigma, X3 sensor technology is a triple layer design where each color (RGB) has its own 15 megapixel layer to, once combined, form a colored image of 15 megapixels, when a total of 45 megapixels are needed (15 megapixels per layer). The main benefits of this technology is that the sensor sees the image in color and not only in levels of grey like all other sensors on the market do. This means that you can kiss the Bayer matrix good bye and get rid of moiré effect as well as the blur applied on conventional sensors to reduced these artefacts. This should result in a highly detailed image, top level color fidelity and most subtile nuances.

But this 46 megapixels APS-C sensor also raises questions about its sensibility...
We hope to get a Sigma SD1 sample soon in order to see how the Foveon X3 sensor behaves in our review.
In the meantime, you may want to check the SD1's minisite in which you can download images shot with the camera.

Sigma Imaging is pleased to announce that the suggested retail price of the new SD1 flagship digital SLR is £6,199.99 including VAT (£5,166.66 excluding VAT). This new camera, offering unrivalled image quality amongst digital SLRs, will be available in the UK this June.

The SIGMA SD1 is Sigma's flagship digital SLR model, adopting a lightweight yet solid magnesium alloy for its body and O-ring sealing connections to make Sigma's splash proof design throughout for use inharsh conditions.

The SIGMA SD1 incorporates a 23.5 x 15.7mm APS-C X3 direct image sensor and dual "TRUE (Three-layer Responsive Ultimate Engine) II" image processing engines. The combination of the 46 megapixel (4,800 x 3,200 x 3 layers) sensor and dual TRUE II processing engines ensure the high resolution images are processed quickly with high definition and a smooth and subtle graduation of colour.

  • 46 megapixel 24 x 16mm APS-C sensor
  • Lightweight yet solid magnesium alloy body
  • Weather-resistant O-ring sealing connections
  • Dual "TRUE II" image processing engines
  • 11 Point Twin Cross AF Sensor

Acer Iconia Tab A500 Review

By sophiesummers on 5:34 AM

Poor camera and bulk aside, the Iconia Tab A500 is exceptionally fast, reliable, and functional.

According to technical specifications, the Acer Iconia Tab A500 rivals other 10-inch Honeycomb tablets. It ships with Android OS 3.0 (Honeycomb) with several proprietary apps, along with a 1GHz dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, GeForce GPU, 1GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

The Iconia Tab A500 is well stocked with additional features, including GPS, a 5-megapixel back-facing camera with an LED flash, a 2-megapixel front-facing camera, microSD card slot to expand the memory capacity, headphone jack, as well as micro-HDMI, USB and micro-USB ports. A version with a SIM card slot should be available on the market soon.

The feature set is impressive, making the Iconia Tab A500 equal to the other Honeycomb tablets on the market, including the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. However, it is somewhat heavier and bigger than those two, making its size its biggest flaw.

Acer Iconia A500 specs:
Android Honeycomb (3.0)
10.1-inch diagonal  capacitive touchscreen (1280 x 800)
1GHz Dual-Core NVIDIA Tegra 250
NVIDIA GeForce Graphics 1GB DDR
216GB internal memory, MicroSD expandable
Front-facing 2.0 megapixel webcam, rear 5.0 megapixel camera with flashWi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n
Bluetooth 2.1 + EDRMicroSD card reader, USB 2.0, micro USB, HDMI, 3.5 mm headset
10.2 x 7.0 x .52 inches (HxWxD)1.7 pounds
Price at Launch: $450

BUILD & DESIGN
The Acer Iconia Tab A500 build is part plastic and part metal alloy, which undoubtedly add to its weight. It weighs significantly more than the svelt iPad 2 and even the relatively bulky Motorola Xoom. Ultimately, the Acer tablet becomes too heavy and hard to hold in hand after a while.

The device's design is not the least bit modern, so, in addition to being bigger, the Iconia Tab A500 is not nearly as slick as Motorola or Samsung's devices. Still, it’s a serious and impressive device, just one that happens to be heavier and larger than the competition.

Fortunately, Acer has taken advantage of its tablet's size and added functional and practical ports. The front is buttonless, which is common with Honeycomb tablets, while the back is rounded on the left and right edge, and includes a back-facing camera with flash and a cover for the microSD card slot. This cover also encompasses the right edge of the tablet, which also includes the volume control keys and a screen orientation lock switch.

The left edge sports an accessory connector slot, while the upper side houses the micro-HDMI port, a headphones jack and the power button. There is also a charge indicator light.

The lower edge has a reset key, both a full-sized and a micro USB port and a charger port. It is a shame that the Iconia Tab A500 cannot be charged directly via USB.

DisplayIdentical to the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Acer Iconia Tab A500 comes with a 10-inch, 1280 x 800, capacitive screen. This is a slightly bigger resolution than what the iPad has, but almost identical when it comes to pixel density, given the slightly smaller screen diagonal of the Apple tablet. The surface of Acer's display is exceptionally glossy, and fingerprints can quickly build up.

On the other hand, the screen features decent image quality. It offers excellent brightness and lively colors. It’s great for watching movies and viewing pictures. The touchscreen's responsiveness is spot-on and smooth.
The on-screen keyboard also impresses. It is large and supports multi-touch for special characters (Shift +).
Compared to the iPad, Honeycomb tablets have different display ratios. They are narrower and longer. This is a good thing for multimedia playback when the tablet is held in the landscape position, however things are more limited in portrait mode due to the thinner design.

Security flaws in new WebGL technology put PCs and data at risk

By sophiesummers on 11:59 PM

Researchers at Context Information Security, an international security consultancy, have uncovered serious security flaws in the new WebGL technology that creates 3D graphics in a browser with the same speed and detail as hardware-accelerated PC games and applications. Context says that design level security issues give potentially malicious web pages low level access to graphics cards that could provide a ‘back door’ for hackers and compromise data stored on internet-connected machines.

WebGL is currently supported on Linux, OSX and Windows operating systems, using Firefox 4, Safari and Google Chrome browsers. In addition to desktops and notebooks, WebGL is also being adopted for use in other devices including smart phones and is rapidly increasing in popularity.

“The risks stem from the fact that most graphics cards and drivers have not been written with security in mind so that the interface (API) they expose assumes that the applications are trusted,” says Michael Jordon, Research and Development Manager at Context. “While this may be true for local applications, the use of WebGL-enabled browser-based applications with certain graphics cards now poses serious threats from breaking the cross domain security principle to denial of service attacks, potentially leading to full exploitation of a user’s machine.”

“We think it is important to raise awareness of this issue before WebGL becomes more widely adopted because this is not an implementation problem, but is down largely to the WebGL specification, which is inherently insecure,” adds Jordon. “In the short term, individual end users or IT departments can avoid potential problems by simply disabling WebGL within their browsers; but the only long term solution is for the developers of WebGL itself to ensure that the specification is designed and tested to prevent these types of risks.”

WebGL 1.0 was officially released in March this year by The Khronos Group, a non-profit consortium of companies including Google, Apple, Intel and Mozilla working to create open standard APIs to display digital interactive media across all platforms and devices. It is essentially a graphics library that extends the functionality of JavaScript to allow it to create interactive 3D graphics within a browser without using plug-ins.
For more information on the security implications of the emerging WebGL technology, Context has published a blog detailing the design level security issues within WebGL along with some examples of proof of concepts.

BlackBerry PlayBook Selling Well

By sophiesummers on 10:31 PM

Analysts are reporting that the BlackBerry PlayBook has sold well over its past month of availability, and that since the PlayBook's launch RIM has managed to put significantly more devices in customers' hands than some other big name tablet manufacturers.

The PlayBook has been available for just under a month (having launched on April 19), but in that time span there have been approximately 250,000 PlayBooks sold. That's nowhere near iPad levels, but it also puts the PlayBook significantly ahead of the Motorola Xoom. It took the Xoom, which is one of the biggest-named Android tablets (and tablets in general) currently available, approximately twice as long to reach 250,000 sales.

Mike Abramsky, an analyst with RBC Capital Markets, developed the 250,000 figure after various channel checks. He also said that sales of the PlayBook have remained relatively steady since launch day.
250,000 units sold actually lag significantly behind RBC’s original estimates, which predicted four million PlayBook sales in 2011, and six million total sales after one year on the market. At the current rate, Abramsky forecasts approximately 500,000 PlayBook sales by the end of the device’s first quarter of availability.
