10-Inch Rosemount Tablet Details Surface

Not long after Dell's tablet plans for 2011 were leaked, certain details about its 10-inch Rosemount tablet are beginning to surface and from what we've heard so far, Dell really does mean business.

The upcoming Windows 7 slate, which is part of the 39-device line up that Dell revealed at its Dell Mean Business event last week, will supposedly be powered by Intel's Oak Trail Atom processor, according to an inside source who tipped off Engadget.

As part of its efforts to make the tablet business oriented, there will also be other features that will make the Rosemount appealing to enterprises, such as serviceable components (like a removable battery), the ability to perform a remote wipe, and software encryption. As for its touch components, Rosemount will also sport a dual-digitizer and support both touch and stylus input.

No other details, such as pricing, availability, battery life, or other internal components, are available at this time. However, the Dell roadmap leak indicates a June launch date.

HTC Flyer Hands On

By sophiesummers on 2:35 PM

Filed Under:

Even though Mobile World Congress 2011 is nearing its end, HTC made a splash, as the EVO maker launched its first tablet, an Android-powered device dubbed "Flyer". After testing the Flyer, we came away very impressed as HTC presented a polished and exceptional device.

It's interesting that HTC went with Gingerbread instead of Honeycomb as the Flyer's OS, given Google's claims that Android 2.3 is meant for smartphones and Android 3.0 is a tablet OS. But because the HTC Flyer has Gingerbread upgraded with HTC's user interface, Sense UI ("for tablets", as HTC execs emphasized), Flyer's Android 2.3 is equally functional as Android 3.0, at least as far as we could tell during our brief time with it.

The bottom line is that the combination of Sense UI and Gingerbread is an excellent call by HTC, given that this created a software platform that is entirely polished, making Flyer a standout tablet amongst the many unfinished Honeycomb devices at the show and at CES.

Smooth Flying
Everything we tried doing on Flyer worked without any problems (apart from using the web browser, seeing as there was no Wi-Fi or 3G signal available) and it was exceptionally fast -- even when we ran videos, zoomed in on images, swiftly scrolled documents etc.

Even rotating a simulated 3D wheel with applications (a part of Sense UI) was very smooth, leading us to conclude that HTC's decision to go with a 1.5 GHz processor instead of a 1 GHz dual core solution, and a 1024 x 600-pixel resolution coupled with an earlier Android version, were wise decisions.

HTC Flyer's screen has precise and fast touch/ finger movement reactions, just like HTC smartphones. It provides very sharp imaging, but the unit we tested did not seem bright enough, and the colors are not as vivid as those found on the most advanced HTC phones.

The device looks "modern," featuring an aluminum unibody that makes for a solid device. Unfortunately, it's also a bit heavy for a 7-inch tablet, coming in at just under a pound.

Interestingly enough, just like the other Honeycomb tablets, Flyer does not have hardware keys on its front; they have been replaced by screen icons. Depending on the tablet orientation, the four common Android keys now appear along the screen edge. This feature is part of the Sense UI for tablets.

We also tried out the N-trig pen, which ships with the Flyer Android tablet and works with HTC's Scribe technology. Overall, it's very polished, precise, and accurate, and the pen's pressure sensitivity works well. Another useful feature automatically creates a screenshot just by the touch of stylus on the screen. Note-taking is a simple joy, as is erasing.

On Demand
HTC's video-on-demand service, Watch, seemed like an abundant video store judging from our quick browsing. However, pricing is not yet clear. There is a similar problem with the cloud gaming service OnLive, which allows users to access and play first-rate games remotely, without the need to download. As a concept, it's a great service and addition to the Flyer, but we'll have to see it in practice before rendering judgement.

HTC representatives claimed the Flyer will be available worldwide in Q2 2011. As it stands, the HTC Flyer seems very polished, and with some time to go before its release, HTC has an opportunity to really take advantage of the Flyer's potetnial.

New ViewPads, MeeGo Spotted, NVIDIA and Qualcomm Announce Chips

Now that MWC is over, here's a look back at the biggest revelations that came out of the congress, and a look forward to some of the slick new devices we got our hands on during their MWC debuts. Also, in addition to the big announcements from Samsung and HTC, there was plenty of other tablet news to go around.

HTC Lets the Flyer Fly
One of the top stories at MWC had to be HTC's entrance into the tablet race with the announcement of the HTC flyer. The 7-inch device should be an interesting competitor from the company that terms itself "quietly brilliant" (with agreement from many smartphone users). Tablet PC Review had some hands-on time with the Flyer, and our European correspondent said that he "came away very impressed as HTC presented a polished and exceptional device."

HTC also let on that it had larger plans when CEO Peter Chou hinted that the company was working on the form factors for a larger tablet.

Samsung Brings the Big Guns with the Galaxy Tab 10.1
Samsung's MWC announcement of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 isn't so exciting because of the three inches the tablet line has grown since the Galaxy Tab, but rather because the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will be one of several new brand name tablets featuring the highly anticipated Honeycomb Android 3.0 OS.

Tablet PC Review found out during a hands-on with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that, unfortunately, Android 3.0 was not very polished on the device. We also found the high screen resolution notable, and the lack of any buttons disconcerting.

A G-Slate by Any Other Name ?
Debuting at CES as the G-Slate, LG's tablet offering showed up at MWC newly renamed for the European market. Tablet PC Review had hands-on time with what is now known as the Optimus Pad, and we were sad to discover that, similarly to the Galaxy Tab 10.1, its Android 3.0 OS was unfinished. The display seemed average, although LG said that some glasses would have us seeing things differently (the Optimus Pad can run 3D films if users have the appropriate eyewear).

Xoom Making a Slow Crawl to Europe
While Americans can possibly enjoy the first Android 3.0 tablet in a week Motorola took the European MWC as a prime time to let the continent down. It turns out that the Xoom won't hit Europe until Q2, making our friends across the Atlantic wait a bit longer for that first sweet taste of Honeycomb.

ViewSonic Debuts Its Dual-Boot Device
ViewSonic continued its ViewPad line with the ViewPad 10 Pro, which will have the unique ability to boot into either Android 2.2 or Windows 7, depending on the user's preference. And if it in any way makes up for the late arrival of the Xoom, it's more than likely that Europe will have access to the ViewPad 10 Pro long before America (although release dates have yet to be announced).

Intel Lets Media Play with MeeGo UI
Intel's MeeGo for tablets debuted last June at Computex, and the UI was re-unveiled at MWC, unfortunately buffeted by news MeeGo partner Nokia was turning to Windows Phone 7. Intel let the media interact with the interface this time around, and while extensive work has been done on the coding and other underlying technical aspects, the jury says that MeeGo for tablets in its current iteration has a long road to travel before being user-ready.

Barcelona Meets Qualcomm's Next Snapdragon Mobile Chipset Family
MWC attendees received a glimpse at the future hardware that will power the tablets and smartphones of tomorrow. Qualcomm's new Snapdragon chipset features the single-core MSM8930, the dual-core MSM8960, and the quad-core APQ8064. Samples of the dual-core chip will be available during Q2 of this year, while the single- and quad-cores won't be around until 2012.

Nvidia Counters with Its Quad-Core Tegra Chip
Not to be outdone, Nvidia announced its own quad-core chip at MWC, which is codenamed "Project Kal-El". While details like power consumption and pricing did not factor into Nvidia's demonstration, the Project Kal-El Tegra chip smoothly ran video at a 1440p resolution on a screen that was 2560 x 1600 pixels. Nvidia also released a roadmap that planned for a new Tegra release each year through 2014.

Huawei Demos Seven-Incher Based on Old Standards
Huawei showed off its IDEOS S7 Slim tablet at MWC, a new tablet with old specs. The IDEOS S7 will feature Android OS 2.2 and an 800 x 400 screen resolution. The price should be right, though, as speculation points to a $300 price tag.

Sony Working on PlayStation-VAIO-Bravia-Honeycomb Tablet?

By sophiesummers on 1:25 PM

Filed Under:

Now that HTC is in the tablet game, Sony stands as one of the last major electronics makers without a tablet. And aside from rumors, FCC filings and comments made by company execs, it seems the Japanese juggernaut is content with sitting on the sidelines.

That may soon change, as Engadget is reporting Sony is hard at work on a Honeycomb Android tablet codenamed "S1". The top-secret tablet will allegedly have a 9.4-inch screen and unique, curved form factor that makes the iPad-sized tablet easier to hold and operate with one hand. The S1 will reportedly sport a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution and a Tegra 2 processor, just like some of the other Honeycomb tablets shipping in Q2.

Sony S1 MockupWhere the S1 will differ, however, is that it won't run pure Honeycomb, but rather Honeycomb with a custom UI with a focus on Qriocity, which is Sony's European media on-demand service. In fact, a "Q button" might be the only physical button on the device, aside from the volume and power buttons.

The S1 will apparently be a sort of Sony all-in-one device, including PlayStation integration, pre-loaded PS One games, Bravia HDTV functionality (similar to the Panasonic Viera tablet, perhaps), and a hint of VAIO styling as Sony's notebook group is leading in development. However, the S1 may not ship with VAIO branding.

A Wi-Fi-only S1 is rumored to ship in September for $599. The report also mentions an additional Sony Honeycomb tablet, which may be more in line with devices from Motorola, Toshiba, Samsung, and LG.

The High Price of the Motorola Xoom

By sophiesummers on 7:46 PM

comments (0)

Filed Under:

How does the saying go? There are few things that are certain in this life: death, taxes, and the price of the Motorola Xoom is way too high. Somehow, though, Motorola seems to think that this isn't so unreasonable.
Recently, Motorola mobility chief Sanjay Jha went on record at the Mobile World Congress, attempting to defend the indisputably high price point of the company's upcoming tablet.

"We felt that our ability to deliver 50Mb/s would justify the $799 price point. It is 32 GB with 3G and a free upgrade to 4G," said Jha. "Being competitive with the iPad is important. We feel that from the hardware and capabilities we deliver, we are at least competitive and in a number of ways better [than the iPad]." So this raises an obvious question: how can Motorola expect its product to sell well -- much less compete with the iPad -- at a whopping $800?

It's an expensive leap of faith to take. This will be Motorola's first outing into the tablet market, so it's not as if it has a loyal fanbase it can count on to blindly purchase its products regardless of price (like Apple does). Instead, Motorola can only count on those who are looking for a viable alternative to the iPad, and even then, it can only expect those people to follow their interests to a certain point. Paying $800 for an unproven tablet is far beyond that point.

Where's the Demand?
But Motorola isn't the only one that doesn't get it.
We recently ran an article in which we quoted Fred Hickey of the "High-Tech Strategist" and his thoughts about the tablet market. Basically, Hicky maintains that tablet producers are overestimating the demand for their products and as such, they may ultimately have to administer severe price cuts when they find out that what they're charging just isn't going to work.

Indeed, this issue with the Xoom pricing is something of a microcosm of the bigger issue of the tablet market and pricing in general. Sure, the $500 iPad seems reasonably priced in comparison to the ridiculously priced Xoom, but if you look at the price of the iPad out of the context of a comparison (with such an overpriced device, no less), that's still a lot of money for a device that is basically a giant, less portable smartphone. I agree with what Hickey is saying; these manufacturers think that tablets are going to be so popular that it's safe to have higher price points, but this may not be how it actually plays out.

The iPad Exception
Of course, many will counter by pointing at the sales of the iPad, but I believe that this is an anomaly (again, one that exists in part due to the blind loyalty of the Apple fanbase). What about the sales of just about any other tablet out there in the market? Tablets are coming out of the woodwork now that these companies think they'll be the next big thing, and they're all charging hundreds of dollars for their devices that, for the most part, have sold rather poorly.

Maybe somewhere down the road, tablets will become popular enough to prove that these manufacturers will have made the right call, at which point I'll have to eat my words. But as it stands now, I think by pricing tablets so high, companies like Motorola are putting too much faith in the public's interest in these devices and this whole situation is an issue of putting the cart before the horse.

So what do you think? Are tablets the next big thing and should be priced as such? Or are manufacturers getting ahead of themselves and charging way too much for products that they believe will be more popular than they actually will be?

NIKE and TomTom have teamed-up to create the Nike+ SportWatch GPS Powered by TomTom. The new running watch provides direct connection to www.nikeplus.com where you can share your progress and stats with a running community of about 4 million members after you plug it into a USB port on a Mac or PC to transfer run data. The Nike+ Sport Watch GPS is touted as a high performance watch that features an extremely clear and readable user interface that delivers the information necessary to the user while running. Personalization and motivational features on the watch include audible sounds, challenges, run reminders and more.

The Nike+ SportWatch GPS is scheduled to be released at retail stores and online in the U.S. and the U.K. beginning April 1.  Pricing was not announced.

On-Watch Experience
The Nike+ SportWatch GPS is designed to be simple and intuitive with only three buttons and a Tap Screen for navigation. During the run, the new Nike+ SportWatch GPS captures location information while showing runners their time, distance, pace, and calories burned on an easy-to-read screen featuring a customizable layout. Throughout the run, the GPS receiver works in tandem with the shoe-based Nike+ Sensor to deliver highly accurate pace and distance data.

On-watch features include:

  • Tap Screen for setting laps and activating backlight
  • Run History with data from past runs
  • Personal Records including those imported from Nikeplus.com
  • Quick Start with optional shoe-based Nike+ Sensor
  • Heart Rate Monitor compatibility

Some of the unique motivating factors the Nike+ SportWatch GPS offer runners on-screen include:

  • Recognition (or “Attaboys”) for personal records
  • Run Reminders that appear after five days if a run has not been logged
  • Post-run acknowledgement and encouragement

Post-Run Experience
The Nike+ SportWatch GPS plugs neatly into any USB port on a Mac or PC, then immediately launches the Nike+ Connect interface which automatically transfers information to www.nikeplus.com.
“With more than 150 million runs logged since its launch in 2006, Nikeplus.com captures the pulse of the running world everyday,” added Olander.

Nikeplus.com presents runners with the GPS mapping, total miles, pace and elevation data for their most recent run in a rich and engaging way that will be familiar to users of the popular Nike+ GPS iPhone application.

“Providing runners with accurate pace, distance and location information during and after their run gives them the information they need to better train and track their progress,” added Vigreux.

Data from each run is automatically applied to all current Nike+ Challenges, Nike+ Goals, and Nike+ Coach programs in which the runner is participating.

Additional Features at Nikeplus.com
Athletes who want to get the most out of their run and from the Nike+ SportWatch GPS will have access to a huge catalogue of run routes logged by Nike and published by other runners on streets and trails around the world.

Each run will be graphically mapped with the help of TomTom technology, and include route notes, elevation and length. Runners will also be able to find the perfect route by searching the catalogue by location, length, difficulty, and even landmarks.

Since the 2006 launch of Nike+ in partnership with Apple, a variety of Nike+ enabled devices have been introduced to help runners reach their full potential including the Nike+ iPod Sport Kit for iPod nano and iPod touch, the Nike+ SportBand, and the new Nike+ GPS App for use with the iPhone.

Lady Gaga, Polaroid's new Creative Director, joined the company at CES 2011 to unveil the new Polaroid Grey Label line of products co-designed with Lady Gaga. The singer's fans, or little monsters, will be happy to hear that Lady Gaga's artistic vision is behind the design of the new GL10 Instant Mobile Printer, GL30 Instant Digital Camera and the cool GL20 Camera Glasses.

"I consider myself to be a visionary, not just a songwriter and a singer. I am an artist," said Lady Gaga, Polaroid's Creative Director. "I brought my vision and love of fashion, technology and obsession with the future into all of my work with Polaroid."Polaroid Grey Label Products:

GL10 Instant Mobile Printer:

  • Advanced Technology: The newest instant printing experience begins with the embedded dye-crystal ZINK® Zero Ink® Technology from ZINK Imaging. Patented ZINK Paper™ is an advanced composite material with cyan, yellow, and magenta dye crystals embedded inside. Before printing, the embedded dye crystals are clear, so ZINK Paper®, looks like regular white photo paper. The GL10 Instant Mobile Printer uses heat to activate and colorize these crystals.
  • Superb Print Quality: The GL10 Instant Mobile Printer uses ZINK's second-generation thermal technology, delivering image quality that rivals a photo-lab. Prints emerge fully developed and protected by a smudge-proof, water-resistant coating.
  • Aesthetically Pleasing and Environmentally Responsible: Designed for both form and function for use both in the present and future. ZINK technology requires no messy ribbons, toner or inkjet cartridges.

The GL10 Instant Mobile Printer will be available in May 2011 (US $149.99 MSRP). ZINK 3x4" Paper will be available in May 2011 at a price to be announced.

GL30 Instant Digital Camera:

  • Brings the Polaroid Instant Experience to Life: Introducing a new generation to the joy of instant photography, the GL30 uses next generation ZINK Zero Ink Technology from ZINK Imaging.
  • Fuses the Digital and Physical Worlds: Featuring the benefits of a digital camera, instant photo printer and digital display, the GL30 is a creative tool that delivers the best of the digital and physical worlds.
  • Pays Tribute to Polaroid's Legacy: Reminiscent of Polaroid cameras of the past, the GL30 is clearly a significant departure from a typical camera. Designed for longevity, the GL30 is not only for the future, it's an object of desire. Users can select from a number of filters and borders to create truly original images that instantly fit in the palm of your hand.

The GL30 Instant Digital Camera will be available later this year, at a price to be announced.

GL20 Camera Glasses:

  • Merges Fashion With Photography: Never before has the world seen fashion, photography and technology come together in one, singular product.
  • Tells Your Story to the World: Users can instantly capture or upload photos with the built-in camera and then display the images on the glasses' LCD screens for others to see.
  • Expresses True Artistry and Originality: Only Lady Gaga could create a hybrid that's part fashion statement, part revolutionary technology and part tool for self-expression.

The GL20 Camera Glasses will be available later this year, at a price to be announced.
