J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge Unveiled the Refuge iNature Trail

If you have a smartphone that downloads apps, you’re ready to hit the trail at J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) on Sanibel Island and utilize its latest innovation, which officials recently unveiled.
Designed to appeal to the next generation’s techie side and get them outside, the Refuge iNature Trail along Wildlife Drive has two components – one for kids and one for adults.

The iNature Trail uses a set of QR (Quick Response) codes that smartphone-users can scan with free downloadable apps such as Neoscan or QR Scan. Similar in appearance to common bar codes, QR codes typically send scanners to websites for more information.

The refuge’s iNature trail goes a step further and incorporates short, engaging YouTube videos, making it more interactive. For instance, one of the 22 QR codes along the iNature Trail takes you to a YouTube video of Refuge Manager Paul Tritaik welcoming guests to the refuge, while another shows families how to plant a mangrove tree.

The iNature signs will be easily recognizable along the Trail and can be accessed while walking, biking, or driving along Wildlife Drive.

“This is the first such interactive trail in the 550-plus national wildlife refuges,” said Supervisory Refuge Ranger Toni Westland. “We also believe this to be the first interactive QR wildlife trail in the nation.”

“Talk about leading the way!” said Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau Deputy Director Woody Peek at opening ceremonies. “There’s no better way than to be first. It speaks highly of the vision of this group, and we congratulate that.”

“Currently nearly 40 percent of U.S. adults own a smartphone, and it is estimated that there will be more online visits from mobile devices than from PCs by 2014,” said Westland. “Our refuge is moving into the mobile world to educate thousands of people about wildlife and its protection in a whole new way.”

“The iNature Trail is a significant advancement in nature interpretation,” said Tritaik. “It not only takes advantage of the latest improvements in communication technology, but it is environmentally responsible because it allows us to reduce paper waste from brochures. We are very proud to introduce this exciting opportunity for our technologically savvy visitors to learn about and enjoy the wildlife at ‘Ding’ Darling.”

Funds for the iNature Trail along Wildlife Drive were made possible by private contributions to the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society-Friends of the Refuge (DDWS). As a non-profit, DDWS works to support “Ding” Darling NWR’s mission of conservation, wildlife and habitat protection, research, and public education through charitable donations and Refuge Nature Shop proceeds.

Lebelight Technology Co. Ltd, Xiaoyi, Shanxi of China launched its most energy-saving but most effective green product -- a high power LED on 12th, July 2011. 1w of its green lighting products needs only 350 mA of drive current to achieve 150-160 Luminous Flux, which has increased the world record by 70% and also reduced the cost in producing the same quantity of products. This is another world-famous breakthrough of Lebelight since its white lighting LEDs reached 98 lm on 3rd November 2010. This indicates that green lighting LEDs have gone from none to the leading position among blue, green and red lighting LEDs in terms of technology.  It also proves that China has already gone to the very front of LED research, technology and production in the whole world.

Lebelight's Xiaguang Series LEDs which includes white, purple, blue, yellow, and red lighting products ranging from 1 to 100 watts all with a life span of 60,000 hours have successfully passed the environmental and safety check by the international organisations such as ROHS, CE and the test by Chinese National Semiconductor Products Quality Control Bureau, China University of Technology and other authoritative organisations such as Yuanfang and Zhongwei which are involved in setting up the LED international standards.

LG Electronics Launched LG CINEMA 3D Packages

By sophiesummers on 6:04 AM

Following the release of study results showing that four out of five consumers prefer LG CINEMA 3D over Sony and Samsung active 3D televisions,* LG Electronics launched two new LG CINEMA 3D entertainment packages, which include an LG CINEMA 3D HDTV, 3D Blu-ray Disc player and four pairs of LG's lightweight 3D glasses – all packed together in one box.

"As more and more people seek to bring the 3D viewing experience into their homes, LG is offering them an easy-to-buy and even easier-to-enjoy 3D home entertainment package," said Jay Vandenbree, senior vice president, home entertainment, LG Electronics USA. "Our LG CINEMA 3D entertainment packages are very attractive for retailers and consumers alike to bring the latest 3D movies and sporting events into your living room, delivering a theater-like, comfortable viewing experience and a superior 3D picture preferred by consumers."

The Total 3D Package
The attractively priced LG CINEMA 3D entertainment packages come with a 47- or 55-inch class (47.0- and 54.6-inch diagonals, respectively) LG CINEMA 3D HDTV, an LG 3D Blu-ray Disc™ player with the capabilities to play 3D Blu-ray Disc movies in Full HD 1080p picture quality, and four pairs of lightweight, battery-free LG CINEMA 3D glasses.  The 3D Blu-ray Disc player is perfect for playing 3D or 2D Blu-ray and DVD movies, and also has the ability to upscale DVDs to near HD quality. In addition, the TV can convert 2D content to 3D for an endless supply of entertainment options.

LG's Next Generation 3D Technology
LG's CINEMA 3D enables consumers to recreate the 3D movie theater viewing experience in their homes with lightweight eyewear, crisp, bright images and wide-angle viewing. In third party 3D TV tests commissioned by LG, four out five people chose LG CINEMA 3D over Sony and Samsung TVs using active flicker 3D glasses*. In addition, more than three quarters of the respondents preferred LG CINEMA 3D for the immersive 3D experience, 3D effect, overall 3D picture quality and 3D glasses*.

Similar to the 3D glasses used in theaters, the LG CINEMA 3D polarized glasses do not have a battery and never need charging and since the glasses do not need to sync with an emitter, viewers can watch from wide angles in the room.  The low cost of the eyewear also makes it easier to buy as many pairs as needed to host family and friends for a sporting event or 3D movie night. The Film Patterned Retarder (FPR) optimizes the separation of images for the left and right eye, which are then filtered through the glasses to give viewers a better 3D effect with minimal cross-talk. LG's 3D Light Boost, a thin film covering the screen, creates bright, crisp 3D images for a superior 3D viewing experience by helping to counteracting dimness that can occur with 3D content.

Superior Picture Quality
LED Plus with Local Dimming allows for deeper blacks and richer colors by providing even greater control of brightness through local dimming technology to deliver better contrast, amazing clarity and color detail, while TruMotion 120Hz technology brings extra sharp detail to even the fastest moving scenes, enabling consumers to view sports, video games and high-speed action with virtually no motion blur.

Picture Wizard II takes the guesswork out of picture adjustments providing easy self-calibration with on-screen reference points for key picture quality elements such as black level, color, tint, sharpness and backlight levels. Additionally, Intelligent Sensor automatically optimizes picture brightness to the lighting and color conditions in the room for a more enjoyable viewing experience.

Energy and Cost Efficient
ENERGY STAR® qualified – which for TVs means they save energy both in standby and active modes – LG's Smart Energy Saving Features, allow consumers to conserve money and energy. In addition to using about 30 percent less energy than non-Energy Star TV units, the LED Plus with Local Dimming feature of LG's CINEMA 3D also offers greater energy efficiency compared to conventional LCD TV offerings.

The LG CINEMA 3D entertainment package (model LW5300) is available this August in 47- and 55-inch class screen sizes at manufacturer's suggested retail price of $1,399.99 and $1,899.99, respectively.

Smartphone Customers Prefer iPhone over Android Phones?

By sophiesummers on 10:51 AM

Have you realized that smartphone customers are on a buying spree pocketing iPhones, and giving the Android phones a miss? A study initiated by Changewave has pointed out this contrast, challenging the common belief about Android devices over the iPhone.

The study has forecast customers’ potential to buy a smartphone within next 3 months. As many as 46% are planning to go for an iPhone, while 32% will opt for Android. The remaining ones have plans to buy Blackberry and Windows phone devices.

iPhone had been dominating the arena till September 2009 when the powerful and Motorola Droid debuted. The arrival of the Droid gave Android the deserving significance. But iPhone returned to hold the highest demand and maintained the trend with the iPhone 4 that was released a year ago. Current estimates show the demand for the iPhone 4 could drop with the upcoming September launch of the iPhone 5.

By the end of 2010, the number Android and iPhone subscribers were almost equal. But things changed dramatically when Verizon customers got to choose the iPhone over Android. Since then Motorola started losing its dominance. It may be recalled that Moto’s share of buyers dropped by a third to eight percent now.
All the compasses point to Apple’s good in future. Apple’s cloud computing option, iCloud, one of the USP for customers who bought any kind Apple product has come about as a charmer option for Apple fans.

If we look at the smartphone satisfaction statistics, Apple emerges as a winner here too. A 70% of iPhone users are satisfied with their phones, but Android only could satisfy half of their owners. RIM comes quite last in list with just 26%, followed by Windows with 27%.

Samsung Conquer 4G brings WiMAX on a budget

4G continues to spread down through the more affordable tiers of the mobile market, with Samsung pushing out the Conquer 4G complete with WiMAX, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and a price tag that comes in under $100. Available from August 21, the Conquer 4G makes a few concessions to hit that (subsidized) price: the 3.5-inch touchscreen runs at 320 x 480 resolution, and the main camera is a 3.2-megapixel unit with an LED flash.

However, you do get a 1.3-megapixel front camera for video calls, WiFi b/g/n and mobile hotspot functionality, sharing the 3G/4G connection with up to five WiFi-tethered clients. Power is from a single-core 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 Snapdragon processor, paired with a 2GB microSD card pre-loaded.

Bluetooth and GPS round out the main specs of a device which, while unlikely to sway anyone from the top end of the market, will only help grow the increasing dominance of smartphones versus feature phones. The Samsung Conquer 4G will launch at $99.99 with a new, two-year agreement.

Thinking About Purchasing A Kindle? You May Want To Wait for The Kindle 4

By sophiesummers on 12:24 AM

Those who were thinking about purchasing a Kindle may want to hold off, as the next generation model will be launching in the coming months.

Though no exact release date for the fourth generation Kindle has been released, Amazon recently cut costs for refurbished Kindles, with the Wi-Fi only model costing $99 and the 3G version set for $129. If history repeats itself then Amazon will launch the new eReader in a month, as it did with the Kindle 3 after slashing prices for the revamped Kindle.

This news pairs nicely with rumors that the company is set to release a new eReader and tablets in September or October. The next generation Kindles are said to include a touchscreen model and a low-cost solution, and will feature better eInk screens, more memory and a cleaner styling. Other reports suggest the new addition to the Kindle family will not have a physical keyboard.

While these rumors have not been verified by Amazon, news of a lower-cost model eReader match reports that the company is planning to release a lower-margin tablet this fall. Details on such a device have been mum but if Amazon does launch a less expensive slate, tabletsphere king, Apple, could face some competition if the device offers similar features to the iPad.

Google to Host Tablet-Specific App Workshops for Android

Google will be hosting a series of workshops designed for programmers who want to bring apps to Android tablets, in an attempt to enhance the quality of tablet-optimized apps for Android slates.

Though reports vary on the number of available tablet-specific apps for Android Honeycomb users, it is said to be somewhere around 300, which compared to Apple’s 100,000 iPad –optimized apps is rather insignificant. Google’s proposed workshops seek to improve the quality of apps firstly, with the plan to then focus on increasing the quantity available for users.

The seminars will take place in Seattle, New York and Los Angeles on August 15/16, August 23/24 and September 2, respectively. Anyone is welcome to register for the workshops, though space is limited and priority will be given to developers with potential top-tier apps. More information can be found here.

Listen to developers complain, and one of the biggest issues they face when creating apps for Android tablets is the variety in screen design and layouts. It's tough, if not impossible, to craft one app that works seamlessly across all products. Though details on Android’s next operating system version, Ice Cream Sandwich, have been scarce, it has been said that this problem may be addressed with the new release.

Over the past few months Google has improved its Web page to incorporate a tablet-specific design and made the Android Market more user friendly by revamping the interface and including app categories. These workshops are another step from the corporation to better its Android software and maybe boost sales.

Motorola XOOM 3G to Get Android 3.2 Update Soon

The Motorola XOOM 3G will soon join the ranks of its Wi-Fi only sibling and the ASUS Transformer, as it is set to receive an update to Android 3.2.

The software update HTJ85, which is said to be coming in the approaching days, will bring the tablet microSD card support, access to Google Movie video rentals, and the “zoom to fill screen” option for non-tablet optimized apps. The 15.4MB Honeycomb update will be available pending the results of a soak test that is said to occur any day now.

Android Honeycomb 3.2 may be the last version of Honeycomb before the release of Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which will merge the smartphone and tablet versions of Android.

This is not the only update destined for the XOOM 3G, which was the first tablet to be sold with Android 3.0 Honeycomb. It was confirmed last week that owners of the tablet would begin receiving information detailing how to upgrade their device to 4G, though the advancement won’t be available until September. Once this process is complete, the 10.1-inch XOOM will accompany the only other tablet on Verizon’s 4G network, the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Another day, another round of Android tablet announcements. This time, Sharp and Pandigital have unveiled devices that the companies have lined up for a late 2011 release.

Based on the spec sheet, the Sharp Galapagos A01SH tablet is the more exciting of the two as it will launch with Android Honeycomb 3.2. This seven-inch slate will have a 1024 x 600 resolution display, NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, a five-megapixel rear- and three-megapixel front-facing camera, and a 7.5-hour battery. The Galapagos tablet will ship with 8GB for storage, but will support microSD.

The Sharp Honeycomb tablet will ship in Japan by the end of August, and Sharp claims it will come to America by the end of the year. There is no word on pricing, nor is there any indication if Sharp still intends to release the 5.5-inch and 10.8-inch Android tablets it unveiled late last year.

The Pandigital Galaxy
Pandigital is also getting back into the Android tablet game with the Pandigital Planet, Nova and Star tablets, along with the promise of a “flagship product” that the company will announce in December.

Unlike a previous Android product, the Novel, Pandigital is no longer referring to their Android devices as “color eReaders,” and instead are embracing the tablet moniker.

All three tablets will sport an A9 Cortex processor as well as a seven-inch display. They will also support Wi-Fi and HDMI, and come preloaded with the Barnes & Noble eStore. None will have access to the Android Market, so users will have to rely on GetJar for their app needs.

The Planet and Star tablets will run Android 2.2 (Froyo) and feature 2GB of memory, while the Nova will have Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and 4GB of memory.

The Pandigital Planet is now available for $189, while the Nova will ship later this week for the same price. The Pandigital Star will cost $159 when it launches in mid-August.
